{"id":811,"date":"2019-11-17T06:50:14","date_gmt":"2019-11-17T06:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.savecooksbutte.com\/?page_id=811"},"modified":"2021-11-08T02:31:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T02:31:17","slug":"protect-our-natural-parks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect Our Natural Parks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-vivid-red-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/index.php\/2021\/11\/02\/citizen-initiated-measure-3-568-passes\/\">Update Nov 2, 2021: Lake Oswego voters approve Measure 3-568!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/measure-3-568_NextDoor-1024x310-v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3727\"\/><figcaption>Measure 3-568 follows in the footsteps of families, such as the Emery&#8217;s and Shipley&#8217;s, who wished for these natural areas to remain forever wild for generations to enjoy their abundant wildlife and sanctity of nature in an ever increasing urbanized world.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake&nbsp;Oswego citizens have&nbsp;a strong interest&nbsp;in protecting and expanding those&nbsp;elements that contribute to the natural,&nbsp;cultural and aesthetic health of&nbsp;our community. &nbsp;To many residents and visitors, Lake Oswego is known as&nbsp;a \u201cvillage in a&nbsp;park,\u201d a place of physical beauty&nbsp;and respite from expanding regional&nbsp;urbanization. Lake Oswego has an extensive tree canopy as a result of investment in its natural parks and open spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Protect Our Natural Parks<\/strong> came about in response to decades of City exploitation, attempted development, and an appetite to demolish land at the expense of our natural environment. During the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/causes\/save-cooks-butte\/\">Save Cooks Butte<\/a><\/strong> effort, we listened to hundreds of residents&#8217; concerns for their neighborhood natural parks &#8212; many with no deeds, covenants, or restrictions. Whether it was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Springbrook Park (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/pamplinmedia.com\/lor\/48-news\/396464-290161-fifth-court-not-an-option-for-lake-oswego-tennis-center?tmpl=component&amp;print=1\" target=\"_blank\">Springbrook Park<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Cooks Butte (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"\/index.php\/causes\/save-cooks-butte\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cooks Butte<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Woodmont Park (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"\/index.php\/2020\/08\/16\/woodmont-a-natural-park-no-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">Woodmont Park<\/a>, Bryant Woods, or Canal Acres the City routinely considers these natural parks for development that&#8217;s inconsistent with our community&#8217;s desire to maintain them as natural habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> was the result of an 18 month citizen initiative petition (<strong>2020IN-1<\/strong>) effort. Petitioners persevered through the global Covid-19 pandemic, the September 2020 wildfires, and the February 2021 ice storm and power outages to fundraise, reach out, and inform voters with personalized direct mail. Petitioners ultimately collected over 4,800 petition signatures and qualified with 4,433 verified signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> builds upon the City of Lake Oswego&#8217;s Charter &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Chapter X - Park Development Limitation (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.codepublishing.com\/OR\/LakeOswego\/?LakeOswegoCH\/LakeOswegoCH10.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chapter X &#8211; Park Development Limitation<\/a>.&#8221; Chapter X was enacted bu citizen initiative in 1978 to protect Springbrook Park from being developed into a major <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"athletic facility (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1978-Springbrook_Park-Athletic_Facility.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">athletic facility<\/a>. Voters overwhelmingly approved to &#8220;preserve Springbrook Park as a natural area&#8221; buy a 3-1 margin. Springbrook Park is the ONLY natural area park protected in the City Charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> enhances and expands the existing Chapter X with improved development limitations and 15 additional natural parks. Additional natural parks may also be included by the City, a grantor, or voters by designating them as a &#8220;Nature Preserve.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> was the ONLY citizen-initiated natural parks measure on the Lake Oswego November 2021 ballot. It was the only measure endorsed by two prominent environment and conservation organizations: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/2021\/09\/04\/sierra-clubs-oregon-chapter-endorses-measure-3-568\/\">Sierra Club<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/2021\/08\/24\/oregon-wild-endorses-measure-3-568\/\">Oregon Wild<\/a>. These organizations carefully reviewed the Citizens&#8217; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> and City Council&#8217;s competing <strong>Measure 3-575<\/strong> carefully and chose <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/2021\/08\/24\/oregon-wild-endorses-measure-3-568\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/2021\/08\/24\/oregon-wild-endorses-measure-3-568\/\"> <\/a>as the best to protect our natural habitats!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\">Measure 3-568<\/a><\/strong> was approved by voters in the November 2, 2021 Special Election.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/index.php\/causes\/protect-our-natural-parks\/citizens-measure-explained\/\"><strong>Measure 3-568<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;garnered 8,136 votes, or 62%, and winning by a substantial margin of 7%, or 837 votes, over City Council\u2019s referred&nbsp;<strong>Measure 3-575<\/strong>&nbsp;which garnered 7,299 votes, or 55%.
