Many times, the City has expressed that mitigation is equivalent to preservation. But, our community knows better. Mitigation is rarely successful at restoring a natural habitat back to its previous splendor; destroying what was once a thriving ecosystem and reducing the public&#8217;s enjoyment of its once natural surroundings for decades, if not forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>INITIATIVE TO PRESERVE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019_11_05-Lake_Theater-Marquee_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-984\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Measure_3-568_Print-Ad-v2-1280x597.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4309\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Oswego residents mobilized and executed their Oregon Constitutional right to amend their City Charter through an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/loveloparks.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e163e553976e270ce9e188a01&amp;id=3cca050475&amp;e=1a506a38ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initiative petition<\/a>&nbsp;in late 2019; their goal was simple: to enact legal safeguards to protect 15 natural areas &#8212; Nature Preserves &#8212;&nbsp;from all future development that was inconsistent with preserving them as natural areas. Garnering more than the required 15% of all&nbsp;registeredvoters signatures, no small feat, the initiative petition was successfully brought forth to all Lake Oswego voters with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/loveloparks.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e163e553976e270ce9e188a01&amp;id=0fb6cbd348&amp;e=1a506a38ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Measure 3-568<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the behest of a few closely connected citizens who refused, from the beginning, to accept our citizens&#8217; efforts, City Council forwarded a toothless referendum to compete against the citizens&#8217; measure in an effort to keep control over developing natural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having been well-informed throughout the citizens&#8217; initiative and measure campaigns, the majority of voters (62%) ratified citizens&#8217; Measure 3-568 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/loveloparks.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e163e553976e270ce9e188a01&amp;id=19931abf1a&amp;e=1a506a38ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">November 2, 2021<\/a>. In a historic moment, voters chose to place 15 Nature Preserves into their custody; all future development not explicitly allowed (and what should be a very rare occurrence) would require a vote of the people &#8212; leaving a legacy of nature for future generations to enjoy all their natural splendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NEW THREATS EMERGE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waluga-west-600x280-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waluga-west-600x280-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/waluga-west-600x280-1-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stevens-meadow-childsrd-600x280-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stevens-meadow-childsrd-600x280-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.loveloparks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stevens-meadow-childsrd-600x280-1-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent development threats at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/loveloparks.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e163e553976e270ce9e188a01&amp;id=2dc30f197b&amp;e=1a506a38ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waluga Park &#8211; West<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/loveloparks.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e163e553976e270ce9e188a01&amp;id=201dc386d6&amp;e=1a506a38ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stevens Meadow<\/a>&nbsp;have emerged demonstrating a defiant City culture that is willing do whatever it takes to further development at the expense of our natural environment &#8212; disrespecting our community&#8217;s explicit intent to preserve our natural areas as enshrined into law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the fate of these two Nature Preserves remains unknown, there is one known constant: our community&#8217;s heritage, activism, stewardship, and initiative to preserve them.
